Things To Know About Refrigerators
  • ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators are required to use 20% less energy than other models. Choose a new ENERGY STAR® model and cut your energy bills by at least $165 over the lifetime of your fridge.
  • Purchase the right size refrigerator for your needs. Generally, the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption; the most energy-efficient models are typically between 16 and 20 cubic feet.
  • If possible, install your refrigerator away from your dishwasher, stove, heat vents, and direct sunlight. The heat and moisture make the refrigerator work harder, reducing its efficiency. If you have to put them next to each other, place a sheet of foam insulation between them.
  • Leave space between the refrigerator and walls to allow air movement and brush (or vacuum) refrigerator or freezer coils regularly to maintain the most efficient operation.
  • While manual defrost refrigerators use less energy than automatic defrost models, they require regular defrosting to maintain their efficiency. Be sure to choose the right model to best suit your lifestyle.
  • Set your refrigerator at the best temperature – a fridge that is 10° F (5° C) colder than necessary uses 25% more energy. Refrigerators should be kept between 35° F (1° C) and 38° F (3° C), freezers at 0° F (-17° C).
